Hockey Pool Roundup

I wanted to make a summary of my performance in hockey pools this year, so I figured this would be a good way to do it.

Regular Season
1. Main Local Draft, 20 players each, snake style, points only
Cost: 20$
Result: 1st of 5
Winnings: +80$
2. Fantasy hockey, Sporting News, season 1 (1st half)
Cost: 0$
Result: 1st of 7
3. Fantasy hockey, Sporting News, season 2 (2nd half)
Cost: 0$
Result: 2nd of 9
4. Box Style draft, point/penalty minutes/goalies
Cost: 20$
Result: ~15 of ~60
Winnings: -20$

Playoffs
1. Box Style Draft, points/goalies
Cost: 10$
Result: 1st of 11
Winnings: +90
2. Snake Style Draft, points/goalies
Cost: 5$
Result: 2nd of 6
Winnings: -5$
3. Vecima playoff pick'em pool, 3 points to pick series winner, bonus 2 points for correct # games picked
Cost: 0$
Result 1st of 31
Winnings: 40$ gas card

Overall, not a shabby year to come up with some wins and winnings of 145$ plus the gas card.

Now to dominate my 1v1 Euro pick'em pool versus Brett.

Dear Candice and Shannon

First off, just let me say how nice you looked today, it was a pleasure to have spoken with you.

I realize this is an important day for everyone and there is a lot of buzz surrounding this afternoons lunchtime beard-off. However, since I have not had much time to socialize with you ladies lately, I just wanted to get this off my chest.

I would just like to share with you reasons why I should win this competition, in most, if not all categories. I will share on a point by point basis:

  • Pity - I had to release my prior growth last week due to the passing of Heather's Grandfather. And while the competition is important to me, the sanctity of human life is the one thing that overrides it. But I have made a comeback since and I now sport a blossomed face like no other.
  • Authenticity - As you already know, I was on the moving crew over the period of the competition. What lends credence to the beard I now wear proudly is the fact it was used in good ol' fashion manual labour. In other words, I looked the part and lived the lifestyle. I let the beard dictate me, and not the other way around. Who else would have realized and respected the power of their beard as much as I? That is the question you need to ask yourselves.
  • Manliness - I have not cleaned up my current growth, nor would I have. I've let it run wild up to this point like I would have, had I not cut it off last week. The beard and I, we are free spirited souls, frolicking in the mystery of life, dancing in the parlour of creation, and basking in the sunshine of wonder.
  • Style - Just reflect, if you will, for a moment on the way my striped shirt "goes" with my beard. I'm not one to brag, but holy hell is that ever awesome. Don't ask me why, because it should just be clear to everyone with no questions asked.

Now, some might see this as an attempt by me to try and persuade you. Some might even accuse me of making a bribe. But ask yourselves this: how does government work? How do celebrities prevent sex tapes from getting out? What is the point of a hostage taking? That's right, they are all based on bribes. Bribes make the world go round and I am just taking part in circle of life.

Failing that, why not create a new category for an award? Something like the spirit award, for most perseverance and dedication to a beard despite all odds.

I'm just saying is all.

Your dearly,
AlexR

Homo Depot

In my continued series at lambasting the man (yes, I said lambasting), today I focus on Home Depot's punishment of their customers by making be cashier/checkout attendants.

In what can be considered partly the best and worst shopping experiences of my life, Heather and I decided to visit the new Home Depot at Stone Bridge. It was deader than hell. We made return purchases instantly with no lineup and comfortably browsed the store, which I should add was completely stocked and amazingly clean and tidy. However, it was when it came to actually making our purchases when I wanted to vomit black things.

You see, I've noticed HD's cheeky attempts to get me to do their work for them at the Circle Drive store with their "Self Checkouts" where you scan in your own items and swipe them, etc. However, I avoid them because not only do I not feel like scanning all my purchases and bagging them and paying for them manually, but I also don't want to have a computer bitch barking instructions at me, AND I certainly don't want the system to fuck up and make me call an attendant to help me. But at the new location tonight, there was NO OPTION! There was only these fuckyou checkouts open. So my fears came true, though Heather was responsible for swiping and bagging, which she annoyingly enjoyed.

You see my friends, it won't be this day where we were the only people in line and there was an actual employee sitting there to help us that will drive you half way to the half way house. It will be the day in the near future where the lineups at this store are miles deep (like they can be at Circle) and you are stuck behind morons in line, or worse, clueless seniors, waiting to be your own bag boy and there is no Home Depot employee in sight.

Way to go Home Depot, you have successfully made us all your bitches.

Random

I played net officially for the first time tonight in last nights scrimmage. And though I showered thoroughly this morning, my hands still reek of glove sweat. It has made beard scratches almost unbearable. Hell, I've almost had to stop picking my nose and eating it. Like that dude at the Leafs game on Saturday. What a lark that was.

Here's a great idea I came up with today: instead of calling it Lydia's, call it Clamydia's. I'm sure that is not very authentic, but it's new to me.

I don't know, it just sounds funny. Clamydia's. Yeah.

Important life changing info

UPDATE: I bought one online, thanks alot to... NOBODY!

Dudes, I did it, I got an HDTV and Surround Sound. It's now time to stop living and start lounging. I'll post pictures later.

I need a component XBOX video cable so that I can successfully play Scarface for XBOX with all of it's 720p glory. Except nobody sells these cables anymore! I guess I could pay 80$ for one online, but that's retarded. Hopefully someone is done with their XBOX and wants to give it to me?

Ok, fine, sell it to me?... cheap?

Prototyping

With only limited selection of mid-sized watermelons available, I found it quite difficult to mount this melon over my... melon. Hopefully, when the real sculpting is needed, larger melons will be available. Not much to my design, just a hole with some forehead and ear room. Man watermelons are juicy though, I was able to rescue a whole glass of delicious juice. Fortunately, I was making a fruit salad at the same time, so not much wastage to report.

Without doing much digging, here is the only help I could find about watermelon helmet creation.

Here's my version. I included some additional photos of our summer experience.

Gore'd

Today, Heather and I got Gore'd in Regina. For 50$ each, we saw perhaps the most engaging presentation on earth by a guy who is supposed to be tired and lame. I thought that not only did he know his shit and present it well, he was able to add some nifty humour to a serious subject.

I was afraid it would be a total regurgitation of the movie, but it felt like at least 90% of it was new to me (or at least forgotten since I saw the movie). So I wasn't bored, and it is nice to see such a concise presentation on the science, effects, and future of global warming, in such a way that Cletus and Jimmy Bob (and Heather) could understand.

Yogurt

Are you ready for some yogurt? A Monday Afternoon yogurt party? We got Alex and spoon and cup, we're going to get it all stirred up. My mouth is all set, everyone's got a spoon. Cause all my rowdy friends are here for Monday afternoon. BOOM! Doodoo doo doo doooooo...

I've been leaving my yogurt for a snack later in the afternoon instead of eating it with lunch. It's good today, because I gots strawberry. I never get sick of yogurt, unlike all those snack bars out there. Fruit leathers, nature valley, regulars, and now even the thick fruit leathers have all fallen out of favour. But man, yogurt, that shit is for life.

Fell Adrunk

I'm going to coin a new term: "fell adrunk." It is the process of unexpectedly becoming very drunk, though upon reflection, the result is quite expected.

Last night, I most expectedly fell adrunk. In hindsight, I only had a muffin to eat all day while helping Heather's sister move, then drank 4 Corona's before supper. And so it began. Its hard to say at what point I fell adrunk per se, because by the time I got to Ryan's, I was way past sober. I suppose I can look back and say, with no food in my system starting out and a smallish supper, I didn't need to drink 13 beers. But, you know what they say, hindsight is... a bitch. Maybe I should coin that too.

Ears of a clown

Well I don't know what I have, but it sucks ass. My suspicions leads me to believe it is one of these:

http://www.tchain.com/otoneurology/disorders/unilat/vneurit.html

This is all new to me. I have never experienced having this before, nor have I heard of anyone having this. The doctors have strongly indicated to me that what I have is viral and related to a cold virus moving into my ear.

I can describe it as spinning yourself in a circle for 30 seconds and that feeling lasts permanently and then trying to function normally. The first morning, while I was showering, I couldn't turn around without falling against the wall. And last night it also felt like I was sitting on slant and watching TV while laying down and on my side resulted in double vision. I was physically unable to focus on the tv. Do you have any idea how devastating that is?

Today I felt a little better, at least I could go to the bathroom without wanting to puke, but the dizziness was still as bad as ever. Speaking of going to the bathroom, I have no choice but to sit now. Very effeminating.

Soccer atmosphere

Sorry for the shitty quality.

Pay attention to how great a time Heather is having in this video.

This is Adriano's goal set up from a free kick. Some subtle things to notice: 1. At the beginning, the fans in the home end of the stadium are all bouncing up and down, causing the stadium to shake. 2. When the goal is scored, someone takes a water bottle and squeezes it while shaking it violently, soaking some of the spectators below us. 3. Everybody in the stadium is smoking, giving off the noticeable haze and the reason for Heather's apparent depression in the last video. 4. Some of the fans shake their fists at the opposing fans as a kind of "fuck you" after the goal. It appears the dude in front of us actually does give them the finger.

Italia

I thought this might benefit / entertain everyone, so here we go with:

The Top Ten Things That May Surprise You About Italy

1. The food SUCKED! Friends of ours recently came back from Italy saying food was the best part of their trip. First of all, their pizza sucks hard goat teat. It is like a tortilla crust with some regular sauce and cheese and 2 pieces of pepperoni on it. Apparently they don't like toppings. Also, I ordered a steak and it was rarer than rare, in fact, they didn't even ask me how I wanted it cooked, I guess they only like their red meat red. It was ~40 dollars Canadian, huge, and tasteless. I ate about a 1/4 of it. Biggest waste of meat ever (insert witty comment here). When my parents went to the grocery store, they couldn't find orange juice, but pear juice, for sure! For breakfast in Rome, we were served toast, prepackaged dry toast. Didn't see a toaster the entire time we were there. Finally, they eat very differently than we do here. The menu has the food laid out like such: first course is pasta, second is a meat dish, and then there is sides like veggies and salad seemed to be served last. And at different restaurants, the serving sizes were so inconsistent you might end up super stuffed or barely full (and we only ever had 2 of the four courses). I would be hard pressed to find anything I would say was better than anything we eat here.

2. Italian soccer is awesome, even if you don't like soccer. I'm sure it can be interpolated to European soccer as a whole, but I've seen Italian soccer on TV and their fans are nuts, nuttier than I've ever seen anywhere else (other than the racist Spanish fans). The game we went to at the San Siro in Milan to watch Fiorentina and Inter had one of the Inter players hit in the head with a projectile coke bottle as he was about to take a corner kick. Although this was the most violence we saw, there was plenty of crowd activity to keep everybody entertained. In Turin, for del Pierro's 500th game, the opposing fans set off loud firecrackers and smoke bombs in the crowd and climbed on top of the hockey-like plexi-glass dividers that attempted to keep them separated from the rest of the home fans. In Rome, the Siena fans charged at the Lazio supporters as they exchanged projectiles launched at each other after Siena scored a late equalizer, despite the fact that security officials divided the two groups. In all cases, the fans at these games were constantly active either waving giant flags or singing or bouncing up and down (in Milan, this bouncing shook the 82,000 seat stadium). The pictures tell tales of the adventures at the games.

3. Bum Washers! In 3 of the 4 hotels we stayed in, we got a bidet tub. It looks like a sink / toilet mixture. You run some water into the basin and then sit your ass down in it and wash your asshole. Needless to say, I skipped this portion of the acculturation process.

4. Italians are slim. It was rare to see an exceptionally overweight Italian and even slightly chubby Italians were few and far between. Either this is because they do so much walking, which seemed to be the norm in places we stayed, or because their food sucks so much that they wouldn't want to eat much. I guess it wouldn't hurt that fast food was basically non existent. There was the odd McDonald's and a Burger King or two in Milan.

5. Traffic was insane. They drive like crazed maniacs. Anytime you cross the road as a pedestrian, you risk your life. They often don't drive in lanes and there are tons of scooters that will weave around anything to get to the front of lines of stopped cars. In fact, you can stand at a cross walk and no car will stop for you unless you inch your way onto the street.

6. They drive on the right hand side of the road. They drive the same way we do, I guess it is just in the UK and Australia that they are backwards.

7. There doesn't appear to be such thing as a double / queen / king sized bed. All the places we stayed in had two single beds pushed together to make a double. This often resulted in one of us sleeping in the "crack." Heather said she liked it, so apparently she is addicted to crack. Everything makes sense now.

8. Late night TV. It's all topless girls advertising for sex lines. Nearly every channel changes to this, maybe even the church channel. I might have been tempted to call if I could ever figure out their screwed up phone system.

9. Liquor. You could buy wine for 2 Euro at the supermarket (and we did!). I only tried beer once, they didn't seem to drink a whole lot of it, and it was not very good. Obviously underaged drinking is not as taboo as it is here, kids that were at the Universiade curling games on a school trip were buying and drinking beer with classmates.

10. Watch out for the tax collectors. Armed guards at all the soccer games and at the Universiade games and at any other big event had "Guardia di Finanza" written on their backs. These dudes look seriously ready to bust some ass. However, translating their Italian names from my dictionary revealed that they were "tax officers". Somehow, this doesn't sound right.

SCREEECH... BOOM!

Screech is actually an exaggeration, because that is not the sound sliding tires make on ice. It's more of a silent death.

Heather and I, while driving north on Wiggins yesterday, up a hill, narrowly avoided a screeeeech... boom. This chick started sliding down the hill going the opposite way as us. It was kind of funny, because I noticed she was sliding as we were coming up to here and I didn't really even worry about her sliding into me. Thankfully, she didn't, she slid right into a tree.

What happened after that was a little strange. She bounced right off the tree and continued sliding down the hill into oncoming lanes, where there was no cars. She then proceeded to drive away, like nothing happened. Now, the car she was driving wasn't a beater or anything, so that's not why she wasn't concerned. I guess there is really no reason to stop, you don't have to share insurance information with trees, I don't think. But then again, I've never been in an accident with a tree, unlike some people, hey KD?

Long story short, I would have stopped the car at least to inspect the damage done to the car, maybe got an eyewitness report from one of the many cars that saw this happen and slowed down for her, and for sure cursed at the top of my lungs before calling my wife and getting in shit.

This place is just to dangercold. I'm out of here. See you in Italy.

Snow Day

This is Saskatchewan, not B.C. So when work decided to send us home early today, that should say something about how bad the weather is. It took me over 3 hours to get home from work today and probably would have taken longer if not for some executive decisions by Adam and I, who carpooled. Props also go to the 3 chicks on the corner of 14th and Preston who were basically digging people out of the intersection constantly and helped us out.

When I got home, I was hoping the wind would have come in such a direction to blow the snow off the driveway instead of plugging it. Was that ever wishful thinking. There was 2-3 foot drifts all over it. So I just got the car going as fast as i could and plowed it up into the driveway. It's stuck nice and good now, ready for some shoveling in the -40 weather tomorrow morning.

What really makes my day is all the weird shit that happened. I guess someone reported that there was a pack of deer wandering around Sutherland this afternoon. Would I ever be pissed if that were the accident I got into. And at work, someones car started on fire. Why today of all days? And then the heart warming story. There is a basketball team from Australia coming into town (by train because they couldn't fly in) for BRIT. Welcome to Canada, hope you brought your swimming trunks!

On the plus side, the Oilers won.

Here is what I get to work with in the morning:

Best day at work ever!

Check out the email we got around lunchtime:

There is a car on fire in the parking lot. The fire department is here and no one is allowed out of the building until they give us the all clear. More information will be coming as we know more.
Oh, and by the way, no peeing on the fence.

The Good Sheep

We went to seen The Good Shepherd last night at Galaxy. Who knew that going to see a spy movie would turn into a covert operation to sneak into the movie theater. How appropriate.

We arrived early due to KD's fear that the movie would be sold out. I guess that is not all that strange given it was cheap night and a newer movie. Turns out this had a drastic effect on the plot. I went to get the tickets while Heather went to get the froyo/coke. I wandered over to her with the tickets and grabbed the coke and headed for the straws. That was the last time the movie tickets were seen.

Now either I just left the tickets on the serving counter or threw them away with the straw covers. There's a chance they disappeared later, but my memory is fuzzy since we went to play video games. This perfect distraction (probably Galaxy's ploy) allowed me to not only give them more money, but forget about the tickets altogether. It was only after KD and I had finished racing that I realised I had no idea what I did with the tickets.

This is where things get ridiculous/fabulous, depends on your point of view. So I am searching away for the tickets in every crevice of my clothing. They are nowhere to be found. Heather is nagging, the movie is starting, and I'm getting pissed. So, craftily, Brad notices that there is nobody manning the entrance to the theater hallway. Light bulbs go off.

We start walking toward the destination. False alarm, Galaxy employee comes out of a side room. We freeze. However, he continues walking to another side door and out of sight. Brad is still leading the way and he passed the target. Hesitant, we are lagging behind. This occurs to me not to be the best idea, and probably 10 times so for Heather. Bravely, I tell her we are making a run for it. We march towards glory. Sam Fisher would have been proud, I tells ya. We make it in and turn toward our eventual safe haven. We make it about three steps in. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I see the attendant come out of the room behind us. "Excuse me, can I see your tickets please." DAMN IT!

So my mind starts racing, how do I explain this one? What would a good spy say? What would a good spy do? I probably should have knocked him out with a nerve gas injection to the neck after hacking the security cams, but I pussied out. "Our buddy has our tickets, he's out there," I said, pointing back to the lobby. So now I've lied to the guy, no chance for remorse for our situation and letting us in on merit. We move back out to the lobby while the guy chuckles behind us. And why shouldn't he? How many times has he seen this happen? Probably dozens. But how many times has it happened that the people trying to sneak in were a working married couple with 300 Euros in their wallets (ie. don't need to be sneaking into movies) and actually bought tickets!? Probably never.

I was sick to my stomach. The movie then got really expensive when the girl at the ticket counter, a new one from the one I had bought from before, didn't buy my story and forced me to purchase new tickets.

Then the kicker.

We take our new, freshly printed tickets toward the attendant so that we can finally go relax and watch our movie. THERE IS NOBODY THERE AGAIN! We walk in without having to show our tickets or have someone stop us this time and nobody is any wiser.

FUCK!

I still have the unused tickets. If someone wants to doctor them to change the date so they can go some other time, I would be interested in recouping some of my gate fees. And yes, I'm sure it is legal.

PS, thanks Brad for stealthily dropping your unused ticket by the gate entrance for me to reuse. Given the attendant standing right beside you, I don't think that me going to pick it up right after attempting to sneak in would have gone unnoticed.

Consumer Reports

This Saturday's paper's flyers had a sweet deal for anyone interested in buying something of significant value. There was an offer from Consumer Reports to get the 2007 Buying Guide and another guide for free! This is nice since I am planning on buying an HDTV this year, wife permitting.

But I might subscribe to the monthly magazines too because it is only 39$ a year. I am going to be the best buyer out there! Jon/Kevin/Kevin, if they review online dating services, I will let you know. I want you to get the best BANG for your buck, if you know what I mean.

Back to work

Ironic how none of my blogging gets done while I'm on holidays, ain't it?

Significant events over the Xmas season:
-Got a Nintendo DS
-Got the Nintendo Stomach flu and had to miss the two days of work that I was scheduled to go back in for. I had diarrhea like crazy. I now know the usefulness of a bidet.
-Started looking seriously into a HDTV, which has now hit avalanche obsession after learning Ryan has gotten a Plasma. I'm considering the 50-inch-ish LCD variety.
-Won my fantasy football league (suck it Blair-itoba!):

Rumour Mill

I don't like starting rumours, but after what happened Saturday night, I think it might be something that should be discussed. I have a feeling that my rye and cokes at the Christmas party were being spiked with alcohol. I'm as shocked as anyone. I will do my best to make sure that doesn't ever happen again.

ps, Ryan and I concluded, the proper term for this sport is "Christmas Tree Guitar", not "Air Christmas Tree" or "Air Guitar Tree"
