Poor Robbie

How the mighty (prospects) have fallen. He couldn't make it in Edmonton over their terrible few years and now he's a floater for the Islanders. But to be mistaken for a Flame player on the front page of the SP Sports section, just above an article written by the Sports Editor... Wow.

Needless to say, Robbie Schremp is the Islander in the photo, not Stefan Meyer. Meyer plays for the Flames and scored a goal in the game, WHICH THE ARTICLE ALONGSIDE THE PHOTO EVEN MENTIONS.

Anyway, game sucked and arena was half full. Thankfully the tix were free, thanks Jay.

Wesley Ooijer

You might know him as André Ooijer, Dutch center back. The Star Phoenix knows him as Wesley Sneijder, Dutch attacking midfielder, and apparent scorer of the Netherlands' game winning goal against Brazil.

Thanks SP Sports, you do yourselves proud. Don't worry about checking the lineup to make sure you get your facts right, because clearly you know too much about soccer as it is. I'm sure you can just assume the guy who "looks" like he's heading the ball in is Sneijder.

SP Sports FUBAR

Good old double head scratcher article in Thursday's Star Phoenix. I wonder if accuracy is important for print media? Do they even proof read this stuff.

Notice how Todd Nichols(on) has different names in different places. I've never heard of this guy, so I don't even know which one it is! And then Todd Blythe is different heights. Did he grow while McCormick was writing the article?



Oh, and another great feature in Wednesday's edition. Though I love these articles, chronicling the Riders by position day by day, they have now used 3 different methods of denoting the imports/non-imports. Wednesday's offensive lineman chart used (n) to denote imports. Hello?

What is this, a tabloid sports section? Who in the Sports department is camel toe hunting?

The who?

In this new recurring feature, I will live out my all too frequent rage of the mockery of sports that the Star Phoenix Sports Editors make. Some days, it is simple grammatical stuff, other days you get complete head shakers, like this:



In this photo, SPS (Star Phoenix Sports) could not correctly identify the Saskatoon based team (Accelerators, soccer). It claims that the Winnipeg Alliance player is on the top, which is incorrect. How does this even slip by? The photo took up most of the front page of the Sports section and you can clearly read the logo on the Accelerators player's shirt. SPS even had a reporter at this game to put into this day's Sports section. Maybe they just got the definitions of top and bottom mixed up.

Way to help a burgeoning league get off to a solid start.



In this mix up, they present an article on Mark Streit, the well-rounded Canadiens' player. He draws much praise CNS writer Pat Hickey, saying that his solid play makes him a shoo in for a big payday when he hits the free agent market this summer ("a versatile performer who has become one of the Canadiens' most valuable players"). So what does SPS do to point out Streit to the readers? They put a picture of Kovalev in with Streit's name underneath of course!
